8138: They Call Me Mr. Peanut!

Nutty news in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Mr. Peanut has undergone a complete makeover, including acquiring a new voice via Robert Downey Jr. Given the recent debacles involving updated identities for brands like the Gap and Tropicana, you’d think folks would be inclined to leave the iconic character in his familiar state. Guess brand managers and ad wonks can’t resist the urge to play with their nuts.

• A new report from Yale University heralded as the “most comprehensive study of fast-food nutrition and marketing ever conducted” indicates fast-food advertisers are actually increasing marketing efforts aimed at children and teens, despite pledges to the contrary. Perhaps it’s time to transform Ronald McDonald into a morbidly obese pedophile.

• Sara Lee may soon become a bimbo. No, really, the brand is reportedly nearing an agreement to sell its North American bakery business to Grupo Bimbo SAB, the world’s biggest bread maker. The sale figures range from $900 million to $1 billion, so you know folks will be making a lot of bread in this deal.
